Much Ado About Nothing 2004-05-08 @ 8:23 a.m.

I went and saw Baruch's class put on a production of "Much Ado About Nothing" yesterday night. It wasn't half-bad, but I guess I know the story so well that it doesn't really impress me anymore - I acted for it in junior high school. Baruch played Leonato, and I thought he did much better in the second act, where his daughter gets accused of sleeping around before her wedding night and he loses it. The costumes were pretty good for a school production - they aimed for early 20th century, although it was strange in that they had the constable dress up like 80's crossing guards. And then there was that weird dance that the villains did before they went off stage! What was up with that? And have anyone else noticed that Beatrice and Benedict are ALWAYS redheads?

Baruch's mom was there for the performance. Apparently, she tried hooking up my friend Megan with Baruch! I guess she took one look at Megan and thought, "Yes! Nice Hispanic girl for my son!" She was a little confused to later find out that Megan doesn't know any Spanish, seeing as how her Spanish and Portuguese ancestors (disregarding her Irish and Native American ones) came over to the USA a couple of generations ago. But that is not the point! Baruch is GAY! Doesn't this woman get it?! From what Baruch tells me, this is not the first time this has happened, and at this rate it probably won't be the last. Finding him "the right girl" will not make him straight! I guess it may partly be Baruch's fault for pretending to be bi for a long time. Although, he has told me that once in a great, great while, he'll find a girl attractive. But if that only happens like 1% of the time, and he's as crazy about guys as he is, it really isn't right for his mom to try to force that on him. Whether or not he has a marriage, family or kids is not up to her - if she wants more kids, she should have them herself. She shouldn't just tolerate him, like a "cold piece of chicken" (great line from Six Feet Under). She should be happy for whatever makes him happy - well, sans mass murder and all. And she should also learn that marriage and children is not all its cracked up to be!

On the topic of Megan, I met her in my California Literature class. We're working together in a group on a presentation for Tuesday on the history of African Americans in Los Angeles, which we're somehow supposed to condense into 15 minutes. But the coolest thing is that Megan knows my roomate Casey very well! She does activities with the Catholic group on campus from time to time, which Casey was very involved with at the beginning of the year. Apparently though, he's been spending so much time with Aaron and Julie that his friends from that group don't see him much anymore. Oh, but wait till you hear the juicy gossip I got on that boy! It is an entry in itself!
