A Journey to Reality 2004-07-24 @ 9:29 a.m.

I often think about the big picture of things before I go to sleep. Time you spend alone in your bed is a wonderful oppertunity for many thoughts, dreams and mind-experiments. I have developed something of a technique to encourage yourself to think outside the body. Try this if you like and let me know how it goes for you.

1) Do all the stuff you need to do before sleeping and then lie down in your bed.

2) Close your eyes and listen to all the signals you are receiving from your body. Start outside of yourself and then move inward. Hear any sounds in the night or your room. Feel the texture of your bed and your sheets against your body. Taste whatever is left in your mouth. Watch the dark, effervescent colors that move around your field of vision while your eyes are closed.

Now, become aware of the interior "noise" of your body. Feel your breathing. Does it feel healthy? Feel and hear your heart beat. Is it beating in a healthy manner? Do you tend to identify with that heart to strongly? Feel any aches and pains in your body as anything that feels healthy and good. Are there any messages your body is trying to tell you?

3) In accord with the last step, become aware of any emotions you are feeling. How do these emotions affect your body? Is there anywhere you've tightened up in defense? Are you letting any emotions overwhelm you or affect your health adversely? Where are your emotions located? Contemplate the nature of your emotions? Are the lasting, or temporary? Do they define you, or do you define them? Now, even as you feel negative emotions, concentrate on positive ones. Contemplate all the good things you have in your life, despite all the bad. Remember what you value and what brings joy to your life. Bring that joy into yourself, in recongnition that the very fact you love it and seek it means it is already within you.

4)Now examine the nature of your mind. What are your thoughts like? How often do they come and go? Do any seem to be playing like a broken record? Do your thoughts have a location? Now, balance out any excess negative thoughts with positive ones. Remind yourself about all the good things in your life, in who you are and what you love. Watch and observe your thoughts and realize they are not you.

5) Turn your contemplation fully inward. Little by little, you should be moving your attention away from temporality towards the infinite. Move your attention away from the outside world, away from your body and physical sensations. Transcend your emotions, and then your thoughts themselves. You cannot stop perceiving all these things, but where you focus your attention makes a big difference. The less attention you pay to something, the more it will seem as if it is not even there. Contemplate how you perceive the world and where you focus your attention throughout the day. What do you ignore or take for granted? What do you become hung up on and focus on excessively?

6) Now become aware of awareness itself. Imagine that the outside world, your body, your emotions and your thoughts are all gone. At the highest level, what is left? What are you? Contemplate your attention itself. Does it have boundaries or limits? Is it located at any particular place? Is it everywhere, or nowhere? When everything temporary about you is boiled down, what is left? Reflect on the mystery of consciousness. Ask yourself: Who is watching?

7) Extend your very consciouness upon its source. With your awareness, reach out to the origin of your awareness. With the truest part of your being, send out a prayer to be united with this Source, this One Spirit. Transcend time and space. Feel your conection to everything. Notice the lack of separation and differentiation. Open any part of you that is still closed off. Sweetly surrender yourself to this All-Encompassing Being. Open yourself to receive communion, knowledge and guidance from the rest of the Universe. Ask for what you really need, and treasure what you receive here. Bask in this place and experience the joining of your receiving to the Universe's giving, beloved and lover. This place is a gate to God and to Truth. Sanctify it and travel to it whenever you need to commune with the Highest Realities.

If you faithfully follow through with this meditation, you will at the least perceive things in a new and interesting way. Maybe you might even have a spiritual experience of something wonderful and profound. Let me know how this goes - peace!
