Letters to Nick (5) July 21, 2003 @

[Nick,]

You've got a penny? Well... I've got a dollar! I've got a dollar! I've got a dollar, hey hey hey hey...

Do the corporations make life happier and easier for us... good question. My answer would be that in reality they don't, but they give us the illusion of such things. Another aspect of The Matrix symbolism if you will. The corporations try to convince us that all is right in the world and that as long as we keep consuming products and don't ask questions, everything will go smoothly. The problem is that A) material things in themselves cannot make people happy, and B) it is these very corporations that are either encouraging or directly causing most of the suffering in the world. I don't believe in dictatorship, but I think maybe there is a good balance somewhere between capitalism and communism - democratic socialism, if you will. I guess I beleive that we should at least take care of each others' basic needs, or that we should all at least share an equal burden. Like, for example, being taxed for 10% of your income can mean very different things to a poor versus a very wealthy person. hence I'm in favor of a stratified tax bracket system. The problem with a lot of the economy is that there's this old economic theory called trickle-down that's been disproved time and again that people keep putting their faith in. Its basically a belief that the more money rich people have, the healthier an economy we'll have. This of course is absolute bullshit because rich people tend to hoard their money instead of spending it or investing it in things that benefit the public. Whereas poor people, if you send them money, tend to have needs they have to take care of much more immediately - paying bills and debts and such. Because of this, I believe that increasing the minimum wage is not hurtful to the economy - in fact, it might actually help it.

Yeah, I do get the impression that the Bay pales in comparison to the coast. I've never been to Half Moon Bay myself but it sounds great! I'm bracing for a trip to hot weather myself... I'll be home in 2 days, but in another week I'm off to New Mexico for a backpacking trek that should be about a week and a half. Philmont is one of the few places I know I will get a tan at. It will be quite toasty there, but our group isn't going on too strenuous a trek, at least from what I understand. And of course, how could I pass up the oppertunity to visit some of the Mexican restaurants there? OMG, that food is just out of this world. It makes me laugh at what they call Mexican up here. I'm sure that halfway through the trek I'm going to be asking myself, "What the hell are you doing here?" But I'll have my bro with me and It'll be a great time for meditation. Heck, given the trail food they provide, I'll pretty much be fasting anyway.

You like to write sensually too? Ah Nick, you are too cool. I think we'll have plenty to talk about when we get together. Which reminds me... my cell phone # is ________. I'll be back on Wednesday - till then, I pretty much have to keep it off because the roaming charges are so bad. But I check the messages every few hours so if you just wanna say "hi" or something, feel free. I gotta warn you though, I have a weird voice. I ended up taking 4 tries to record my greeting cause I was so embarassed. I wondered if I shouldn't just end up saying something like, "Hi, this is Dave. I've been trying to get my voice on this message to sound decent, but despite my best tries, I still sound really gay. Fine, I give up. I'm gay - get over it. And leave a message after the beep."

Dave
