The Parable of the Starfish January 11, 2008 @ 3:56 p.m.
A man went down to the beach one day to take a walk. When he arrived, he noticed that the tide was unusually very low. Starfish in the thousands were scattered over the bed that had been exposed by the strange weather patterns. The man looked out and saw a woman out amongst the sea of starfish. She was gathering them up and then returning them to the ocean.
"What are you doing?" asked the man.
"Returning the starfish to the ocean," the woman replied. "If I don't, then they'll die"
"But there are thousands of starfish beached out here, and you're just one person. You won't be able to save them all in time. Your actions won't matter."
"It matters to the ones I save" the woman said. She then turned away and went back to work.
After a minute of contemplation, the man went out to help her. And as the hour went by, others came and pitched in. Though they weren't able to save all the starfish, a great number of starfish were saved in this manner.
