Union with the Divine is a big part of magic, but what makes this path different from others is that it really relies on relationships with spiritual entities and paranormal effects to do its thing. Even theurgy involves the invocation of various and diverse celestial beings, to the point of merging and identifying with them. You need to be able and willing to deal with the whole spectrum of beings, or else you will be handicapped. So if you aren't comfortable dealing with anything less than the Absolute, or you're devoted to Jesus to the exclusion of all else, then its better to pursue a different way, such as those outlined by the various Christian mystics over the ages. They can give you what you are looking for without having to deal much with spirits, angels and others (although even then, they do get involved).
This is an active path that is about making practical changes to ourselves and the world around us via the ministry of miracles and spirits. The celestials won't always be able to give you what you want or need -- sometimes you'll have to come down to Earth to obtain what you desire. I have a friend right now who's very conversant with the angels and uncomfortable with the earthies, and he's suffering tremendously in his love life and praying them in vain because the angels either can't or won't help him -- only exhort him to patience and faith and the usual cliches. They are too far removed from our experience to be able to help us with a lot of practical things -- in fact, if you ever talk to them, they can't understand why we care about any of it because time is just the blink of an eye to them
anyway.
You have to be ready and able to deal with cthonic forces when the situations demand -- especially if you ever want anything personal. And at the very least, you have to confront your personal demons so that their power over your life ceases. Don't be
misled by simple black and white answers to things - reality is much more complex.
