Re: The Abramelin Operation July 11, 2008 @ 1:38 p.m.

Sacred Magic of Abramelin Webgroup

Being able to tie the rite into the solar mysteries and processions adds a big boost to it and provides a lot of aid, but its not strictly necessary. Abraham says as much - his thinking is along the lines of Paul when he says that for the spiritual person, every day is a holy-day.

The heart is the gateway to the higher worlds and our first step out of the reign of the ego. Its very important and worth contemplation and meditation: look at all the power and symbolism associated with the sacred hearts of Jesus, Mary, St. Germain, etc.

Nonetheless, I feel that the HGA is actually more associated with the Crown and the Fullness - way up there in the most abstract levels of Divinity and Identity. Way beyond the planetary and stellar powers to be sure - remember the emphasis on the difference between the HGA and the angels of nativity? This is much more than the task of a minor adept IMHO. Abramelin is an accelerated program of growth and initiation - its the Navy Seals of Ceremonial Magic. It is the training of a true Magus and Esoteric Priest.

If you're gonna do the vegetarianism, you might as well go all the way with it. No sense selling yourself short when the whole idea is to eat the lighter foods and clean yourself out. Granted, fish is probably among the healthiest of meats, but its still an animal. I've never really understood so-called vegetarians who continue to eat fish and/or poultry.

As regards the psalms, I think they are a very rewarding and worthy subject of contemplation and study. Even if you don't want to recite them personally, they deserve your attention and have a lot to teach you - don't miss out on any of the education Abramelin has to offer :)

The art of confession is not so much about beating yourself up and feeling guilty as it is conducting retrospection and recognition of yourself and your faults and releasing your life into the hands of the Divine through forgiveness of self and others. I say, first and foremost, acknowledge, confess, forgive, and request aid with those things that YOU regret and feel remorse for. What things from the past are holding you back; haunting you? What places do you feel like you made big mistakes? What directions do you want to take your life in now? These are all very important practices that are about so much more than church of Rome bullshit. God has already forgiven everyone - Christ testified to that with his life and resurrection. But only we can forgive ourselves and let go of the grudges we hold against others, and this is for our OWN good!

You don't necessarily have to give up the sex, but it is necessary to approach it with a new reverence and respect, and to integrate it into your practice. The Simon Necronomicon, which has a very similar initiation system in many respects, also talks about sexual cleanliness, but it mentions something very important. It says the exception is that you may "Worship at the Temple of Ishtar, provided you do not lose your essence, and this is a great secret". I've only really begun exploring sacred sexuality, and I send the energy to my HGA a lot of the time. If you can manage to integrate it, it would serve as a very powerful boon to your practice (as well as your love life) :D

The silver mirror isn't part of the initiation in the original 18-month version; however, they include something similar to it in the instructions for a ritual to obtain additional squares from the HGA post-op. Hey, if you're gonna do this well, you might as well do it in style. If there were ever a good reason to spend money, this would be right up there on the list.

Do you Athena, or any others who are reading this, have any other advice to share with me and those who are performing this rite? I read several times especially about your recommendation for seclusion and the importance of the last week. Is there anything else you wish you could tell your former self and us who are going through this ceremony?

I would actually tell you guys a lot of things, but I have to be careful not to say too much, you know? But here's a few things that pop to mind straight away. First, take the time to make your own copy of Abramelin, in the original, word for word. Its time consuming, but you learn SO MUCH! Abraham requires you to read the text completely at least twice in the six months prior to the operation, so that you understand the instructions thoroughly and have a solid grounding in the cosmology and ethics. He even says that he's deliberately scattered material throughout the text and out of order to force you to read it thoroughly, and I've since learned that this was a standard canon with solomonic magicians, and that you can find all sorts of material seemingly "hidden" in the grimoires by just reading the entire thing - spirit lists and all. The lemegeton is really notorious for this in particular.

Along with the text, study the scriptures, especially the Jewish and Christian ones. I mean, study them in every respect, through every school of thought, and from every angle, and you will learn so much. I had a lot of time to spend in research myself while I waited to become old enough for the operation: 25 is when the Crown chakra and associated organic glands really kick into effect and end physiological immaturity. And even while you're undergoing the months of purification, study - which is a quintessentially Jewish concern - forms a very important part of your training and education as a mage.

Abraham presents the operation as essentially Jewish in nature, and by gaining a thorough familiarity with the history, religion, mysticism, etc, you will open all kinds of doors for yourself and turn on all kinds of lightbulbs. Its not necessary to agree or comply with everything, but you do need to understand it. I was raised in reform Judaism, but I am Gnostic, so for me it was a real oppertunity to learn about my heritage and religion through many different lens and angles. And since Yahweh is such a bogey-man for pagans and modern people, being able to really understand him and his religion will free you from fears and prejudices and other misgivings that hold you back in your personal practices. I've come to appreciate both polytheism, henotheism, monotheism, and Gnosticism for each of their respective gifts and virtues.

And also, its been said before but bears repeating: DON'T QUIT

I have no idea what the future holds but I hope with all my heart and soul that this ritual is completed successfully.

That hope alone will probably see you through. God cuts to the heart of things and values your sincerity more than anything else I think. You can't know how this will turn out because you are venturing into unknown and indescribable territory. But its bound to be good no matter what happens.

Love, David
