Explanation of the Keys of Solomon November 08, 2008 @ 10:47 p.m.

Order of the Necronomicon Forum

The Greater Key is about celestial magic, and is a good complement to the study of 7 celestial gates of the Necronomicon. Aaron Leitch's book about the Solomonic tradition, "Secrets of the Magical Grimoires", is excellent. The Necronomicon teaches you to summon and interact with the same kinds of spirits, if not the very same spirits in many occasions. As you progress through each gate, you can construct, consecrate, and utilize each corresponding set of planetary talismans. Just as with the 50, each spirit and sigil has mysteries to impart that are far more than meets the eye.

The Lesser Key, or Lemegeton, is about the magic of Malkuth/Kia - the sphere of Earth, the elements, the physical and low aethyric planes. The Goetia deals with what one person I read called "The 72 apostates". They are not necessarily evil, but rather they oppose the so-called "divine order" on political grounds. They are infernal powers that draw from the Fire below versus the Fire Above. But that Fire is all really the same Fire in the end.

I have started working with the Theurgia-Goetia recently, and its proving to be very interesting. Don't be intimated by the large number of spirits. Start with a trip to Carnesiel's palace in the east and ask to be initiated into the system. I have found that it has a lot in common with magics that are popular in the east - it deals with spirits whose abode is between heaven and earth and whose loyalties and beliefs shift sometimes. Some of the spirits are nagas, just like those honored in India. Others are more like dryads, and others are very oriental and formal in appearance and demanor. Its fascinating stuff.

The Pauline art is important. The first part teaches the magic of the hours and how earthly hours interact with the heptarchy in heaven. The second one deals with zodiacal spirits for each degree of the astrological signs, and it outlines an interesting and good method to contact your astrological genius, the angel of your fate. Kathy McDonald has written a good pdf about her experience with it.

The Almadel deals with the 4 choirs of angels that serve the 4 altars of God on Earth. They are called Altitudes in the sense of "high places", not necessarily as a measurement of height. They have many blessings to impart, though I don't know if they are as tangible and concrete as, say, the goetic spirits.

The Nortary Art teaches the art of magical citations - prayers that are mixed with power words (nomina barbara). Each citation is to be read on certain lunar dates under certain conditions to effect specific changes in your mind and life. The idea is to open up all your capacities for wisdom to the fullest, and then everything else will flow from that. Its very effective magic, and there are sections of the 6 & 7th books of Moses that use the same methodology. I've been studying it and trying to utilize it somewhat this month, and even though I've only tapped the surface really, I've had very good results and big increases in my own wisdom and understanding, especially of written materials.

There is also another book in the Solomonic tradition worth mentioning, called "The Testament of Solomon". It is from the 2nd or 3rd century if I recall. It is a record of a whole series of demons that Solomon identified cause various health problems. It also teaches which angels can control and remove said problems.

'Nuff said. ;)
